Paragliding

Noise-free flight

What is paragliding?

Paragliding is the art of flying using a kind of parachute adapted to free flight. It is not the same as the rescue parachute, it is designed to make you fly for a long time. It consists of a large fabric sail attached to lines, and the pilot sits relaxed in a harness below.

How does it work?

Paragliding works in a truly fascinating way:

  • Preparation: Before taking off, you must take care to fold the wing well and check all the equipment to be sure that everything is in top condition. Then, you slip into your harness.

  • Takeoff: Takeoff is usually done from the top of a slope, a mountain, or even by using a winch to hoist yourself into the air. You make a small run down the slope, which fills the sail with air, and presto, you're flying away smoothly.

  • Flight: Once in the air, you are securely seated in your harness, with a breathtaking view of the landscape below. You can steer your paraglider by tilting your body in any direction you want. It's like piloting a bird!

  • Landing: Landing is a breeze. You head to a designated landing area, and by banking your glider just right, you land gently.

How much does it cost?

For money, the cost of paragliding depends on a few factors:

  • The model: There are different brands, sizes, and if you want new or used, the price can vary. Basically, expect to pay between 3,000 and 6,000 CAD for a complete kit with the sail, harness, and essential equipment.

  • Training: To fly safely, it is best to go through training with a qualified instructor. Costs for training vary depending on the length and quality of the training, but range from approximately CAD 700 to CAD 2,000 .

How long does it take to become a paraglider pilot?

The time it takes to become a real paraglider pilot depends on you and your commitment:

  • Ground School: You start with ground school where you learn everything about weather, air navigation, and how paragliding works. It usually lasts a few days to a week .

  • Flight training: Afterwards, you move on to flight training, where you learn to fly the paraglider under the watchful eye of a professional instructor. This can take from a few weeks to a few months , depending on your pace and your courses.

  • License in your pocket: When you have mastered all this, you take a practical and theoretical exam to obtain your paragliding pilot license. Most students can fly solo in a few months .
